Homer to Bristol, Days 3-4 - the Allotment!

Rachel: From London, we took a lovely fast train to Bristol. Ben’s sister and Sadie & Linnea’s cousins live there and we were SO excited to see them! They live on the best street, with wonderful neighbors who have provided books, toys, bikes, scooters, and games while we’re here.

Sadie: When we got to Bristol i learned how to tie my shoes! Their house has a purple door which I didn’t expect. It’s three stories tall, is around 18 feet wide, and is so welcoming.

Linnea: They have really weird food. Their pizza sauce is spicy. Aunt Sam found frog eggs in her backyard pond, but we couldn’t find them again! It’s a mystery!

Rachel: The pizza sauce is totally normal - it was made by cousin Felix! The terrace house (in US it would be called a row house) has a sweet little outside area in the back. They have some great potted plants, and a little pond with a fountain.

Rachel: After a good night’s sleep, we went the next day to visit the family’s allotment. In England, an ‘allotment’ is the same as a community garden. Taylor was the BIG enthusiastic energy behind the allotment and we’ve heard so much about it over the years. After he died, Sam and friends are working to figure out what’s planted, and what to do next. We got there and met Matt, a good friend helping to care for things. We helped by watering, lawn mowing, weeding, and planting some potatoes.

Sadie: I did a lot of pushing the lawn mower. It was a push mower. Then I helped plant some potatoes. And I delivered weeds to the bin. Linnea and I were inspired to start a new garden at home. Our very own allotment!

Linnea: The allotment was fun. We got to do a bunch of fun work things. We got to use a lawn mower - it was hard because it was only a pushing lawn mower. But, I got to water and also I got my pants wet. And my shoes. I weeded some too, with mama. The gate had a code to unlock it, and I got to do it the first and then Sadie when we were leaving.
